Wreck Diving

FOR QUALIFIED DIVERS

1. SAs the SS Rangoon sinks beneath the waves at midnight, survivors and villagers in canoes pull away. The captain cuts the engine of our dive boat and we see the historic Galle fort towering in front of us. Excited to explore the shipwreck, we gear up and plunge into the warm tropical water. We are amazed by the hundreds of thousands of glistening jellyfish pulsating all around us. Careful to avoid them, we sink to the bottom and behold the SS Rangoon standing upright in the beautiful sandy bottom. The wreck is a 60M long 1800 Ton heavy sailing/steamer built by 1863. We swim across the length of the wreck, admiring the beautiful marine life around us.

2. This site comprises approximately 20 large iron cannons, situated between Gibbet and Closenburg Islands. The site stretches from the shoreline in a southerly direction, reaching a depth of approximately 24 m. Some of the cannons on the shoreward section of the site have suffered significant erosion due to sand abrasion, with the gun bore being exposed in certain cases. The site's location is intriguing, as it is situated on what used to be Gibbet Island, to the west of the now-filled entrance to a former small bay between Gibbet and Closenburg Islands. This area has been filled in as part of the harbor's development. Initially, it was speculated that the site could be either a shipwreck or a location where cannons were abandoned, potentially from a battery on Gibbet Island.
